Considered to be the first composer to break from the dominating influence of the Italian style of opera, Carl Maria von Weber has been called the father of German opera. And yet his operas represent a small part of his total output of music. He wrote only seven operas of which three have survived as 'repertoire' works: 'Freischütz', 'Euryanthe', and 'Oberon'. Of these three 'Freischütz' is by far the most popular, its melodies and melodrama bordering at time on becoming caricatures. This arrangement intended in part as parody, includes music from the opening horn-chorale, the 'Jägerchor', the 'Jungfrau Lied' and even has a Swiss folksong (meas. 75 1st Trpt.) thrown in for good measure (The opera's setting was to have been a hunting lodge in Wolfsberg, Switzerland). The gun shot and whistle are optional... P.K.
