A kaleidoscope is a short tube that can be rotated at will so that the small, colorful objects in it create infinite variations of symmetrical patterns thanks to ingenious mirroring. It evokes a rapid succession of lively, aleatoric sensations. The Kaleidoscopic Fanfares are a soundtrack to the visual kaleidoscope effects. The 16 trumpet parts are divided into four choirs. Each choir, including percussion, is emphasized. Through the arrangement of the groups and the thematic allocation of the voices, I have tried to provoke acoustic effects that arise from the spread of the sound in the room. Acoustic tests are recommended to determine the best distance between the choirs and the best use of the stage (see plan below). Work description A percussion theme prepares the successive and melodic waves of the four trumpet choirs. This initial upswing ends with a first fanfare followed by a piano sequence. Two crescendi waves end this first part with a glorious theme and a softly fading sequence leading to the second part, where choirs I and II play hymnic fragments, interrupted by short fanfares from choirs III and IV. The themes of choirs I and II develop into a brilliant anthem that ends with a spectacular percussion solo. In the third part, the snare drum and bass drum accompany the various trumpet choirs' short and virtuoso motifs in a marching rhythm. The final section takes up the opening rhythm with a solemn theme and an accompaniment which, worthy of an international trumpet players' meeting, builds up to a glittering firework display of sound. This work was commissioned by Jean-Christophe Dobrzelewsky and Vivace Productions, co-organizers of the 39th Annual Conference of the International Trumpet Guild (2014) in King of Prussia, PA, USA, and performed by the Trumpet and Percussion Ensemble (conducted by J.-Chr. Dobrzelewsky) of West Chester University, PA, USA (host of the conference).
