Description:
Liberation of Sisyphus was composed in the spring of 1990. The work was commissioned by Roger Bobo and written especially for him. The premiere took place in August 1990 in Sapporo, Japan, during the International Tuba/Euphonium Conference. The performers were Roger Bobo and the Tokyo Bari Tuba Ensemble under the direction of the composer. Mythology tells us that Sisyphus was condemned for all eternity by Zeuss to roll a huge stone up a steep hill. His hypothetical "liberation" is musically portrayed here in this virtuoso piece for solo tuba and tuba octet. John Stevens
