No Mud, No Lotus is a phrase coined by the Vietnamese Buddhist teacher and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh. It alludes to our tendency to escape all suffering through avoidance or distraction. His teaching, however, reminds us that the joy and beauty of life cannot be found by avoiding suffering—we must acknowledge and accept it. The lotus, a symbol of purity and enlightenment, can only bloom from the mud. This quartet, with its flexible instrumentation, captures the essence of this philosophy. The mood is bittersweet, carried by major-key yet dissonant sounds and a melody formed from the descending minor sixth—a melancholic interval that nonetheless carries the seed of joy, for its inversion is a radiant major third.
