Description:
Prometheus and the Gift of Fire was commissioned by tubist Roger Bobo, composed in 2009 and premiered by trumpeter John Aley and the Wisconsin-Madison University Euphonium/Tuba Ensemble under the direction of the composer. It is John Steven's second work based on Greek mythology, following The Liberation of Sisyphus for solo tuba and euphonium/tuba ensemble [Editions Bim TU9b/c - 1999 - 10'50'', also commissioned and recorded by Roger Bobo]. The present work is freely inspired by the progress of mankind, which it was able to realize thanks to the fire that Prometheus had stolen from the Titans. The piano reduction is in the composer's own hand. The work also exists in a third version, for trumpet and strings.
