Description:
This lyrical piece is divided into two movements. The Andante immediately reveals the theme in the form of an introduction. Following is a 'Chorale', to be played with nobility in spite of the instability of the harmony and rhythm. The coda uses a variation of the initial motive and employs augmentation to lead to the final chord. The performer must pay close attention to the lines of the phrases, al the same time playing them very freely. The second movement is a canon whose theme must be played with emphasis. The chorale returns, in tempo this time, and not as slowly.
