Sharp Wave Ripples for euphonium, tuba and piano was completed in February 2025. The work was composed for and dedicated to James Jackson III (euphonium), Scott Mendoker (tuba) and Elisabeth Tomczyk (piano). I have known Scott since the beginning of my musical life as a trumpet player and composer from performing together in various ensembles. He is one of my closest and dearest friends. I have composed other works for tuba for him, including Emma's Dance, Evensong, Three Portraits and Sightline. Sharp Wave Ripples is my first work for euphonium and tuba and my first collaboration with James Jackson. Elisabeth Tomczyk previously worked with Scott on Emma's Dance and Sightline. The work consists of three movements: 1. Sharp is lively and propulsive, with a forward look and moments of nostalgia; 2. Wave is represented by florid gestures in the piano, complemented by long, thoughtful contributions from the two soloists; 3. Ripples is fast, idiosyncratic and humorous, with a nod to the 14th century caccia. I would like to thank Scott, James and Elisabeth for the opportunity to write for them. I have been fortunate to compose for some of the finest musicians and these three are no exception.
