Composed specifically to show off the voice by means of lightning runs, colorful ornamentation and flashy cadenzas, the coloratura aria has traditionally provided the opera singer with the opportunity of achieving fame and becoming a 'prima donna'. 'Tanti affetti' from Rossini's opera 'Donna del Logo' is a coloratura aria for mezzo-soprano and, although it is not as well known as 'Non più mesta' or the ever popular *Una voce poco fa', it is nevertheless on an equal footing musically with both of these. The trumpet soloist is encouraged to improvise (with discretion of course) his own runs and cadenzas in the aria to suite his technical abilities. P.K.
