Tubists are usually positioned in the back row of the orchestra and, along with the supporting sections and the percussion, are responsible for laying the foundation in the "engine room" of an ensemble. As a result, most listeners tend not to notice the tubist very much. All the more reason to give him the opportunity to shine in the front row every now and then. There are certainly solo pieces for bass tuba, but in most cases they are too challenging for amateur musicians. This is not the case with "Unsere Tuba," composed by Klaus Rambacher. This Bohemian polka was deliberately designed for intermediate-level ensembles. While generally written in a straightforward style, it still allows the soloist room for improvisation with plenty of "room to grow."
