Spes ("Hope") is an expressive and richly contrasting work for wind quintet. Right from its Andante introduction, the music creates an atmosphere of restraint and mystery before gradually evolving into a more dynamic and virtuosic musical language. The five instruments engage in a constant dialogue, alternating between solo passages, ensemble playing, and denser textures. The rhythmic richness and numerous shifts in character lend the work great vitality: lyrical, expressive episodes repeatedly contrast with rapid, brilliant sequences, while the composer subtly exploits the timbres and technical capabilities of each individual instrument. Thus, the form unfolds in a succession of varied moods, ranging from tension and energy to more contemplative moments. *Spes* is a modern, lively, and engaging piece that offers the performers genuine ensemble interaction and a beautiful freedom of expression.
