Description:
The Serenata for wind sextet by John Glenesk Mortimer was composed for the Swiss Wind Soloists in 1981 at the request of clarinettist Kurt Weber and premiered in Bern. The work emphasizes the rich and dense timbre of clarinets, horns and bassoons and at the same time demonstrates the extraordinary virtuosity of this ensemble. The first movement is relaxed and rhapsodic, with free, vocal writing. The second movement, a slightly sardonic scherzo, provides contrast and liveliness. The third movement is expressive and romantic, full of lyrical intensity. The exuberant finale captivates with its energy and variety of irregular rhythms, bringing the work to a brilliant and captivating close.
