There are only two predecessors for the Sextet op. 6, although it is doubtful whether Thuille knew them: the sextet by Louise Farrenc (1804-1875) from 1852 and the sextet by Léon Kreutzer (1817-1868) published in 1875. Chamber music for wind instruments led a shadowy existence in the early Romantic period and was only rediscovered in the second half of the 19th century by renowned composers (Franz Lachner, Theodore Gouvy, Carl Reinecke, Joachim Raff, Richard Strauss and others). Despite the success of his own works for wind ensemble (Opus 4 and Opus 7), Strauss advised his friend against composing a sextet for piano and winds. However, Thuille would not be dissuaded from his plan and wrote in a letter to Strauss on January 5, 1886: "I have now set about composing the previously planned sextet after all, and want to do it in defiance." According to Thuille, over 200 composers have written for this instrumentation, but only a few have achieved the splendor of sound and harmonic richness of this sextet.
