Description:
Edward MacDowell wrote the piano suite Sea Pieces in 1898, shortly after his Woodland Sketches (which feature perhaps one of his most well-loved works, To a Wild Rose). In the first piece, Song, a jaunty main theme alternates with several different melodies in 'changing moods' - giving each instrument chance to take the spotlight. Starlight is more reflective, with lush close harmonies perfectly suited to woodwind.
