The music-historical significance of Johannes Brahms is based primarily on his renewal of the great symphonic form. To the broad concert public, however, he is also known as the creator of everlasting musical miniatures. These include his twenty-one Hungarian Dances and the sixteen Waltzes op. 39. These two piano cycles have conquered the concert halls of the world, not least as orchestral instrumentations of individual movements. Against this historical background of reception, it seems logical to transfer these pieces to instrumentations other than the large orchestra.
Miloslav Richter chose three of the most popular numbers from the dances and waltzes for his arrangement for woodwind trio. Since the part excerpts are available in various, easily playable transpositions, a maximum of variability opens up for any small woodwind groups. With younger musicians, this edition can easily awaken interest in 'Classical Music.
