No Mud, No Lotus

No Mud, No Lotus is a phrase coined by the Vietnamese Buddhist teacher and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh. It alludes to our tendency to escape all suffering through avoidance or distraction. His teaching, however, reminds us that the joy and beauty of life cannot be found by avoiding suffering—we must acknowledge and accept it. The lotus, a symbol of purity and enlightenment, can only bloom from the mud. This quartet captures the essence of this philosophy.
