Fernande Decruck composed Pavane in 1933 for the saxophone quartet of the Republican Guard, then made a different version for the clarinet quartet. In 1949 she wrote two more versions, one for reed trio, the other for oboe or violin and piano. While all these versions highlight the composer's melancholic penchant for using the same sad melody, they differ slightly from each other in length and harmonic content. But the three minutes of Pavane are enough to perfectly illustrate the singular genius of the composer.
