Dukas's 1897 symphonic poem 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice' is based on a ballad by Goethe: an old sorcerer briefly leaves his magic workshop in the care of an apprentice, who attempts to use the master's magic without knowing how to. The results are increasingly catastrophic, until the sorcerer returns and rescues the situation. Dukas's score was catapulted into popularity by its inclusion in Walt Disney's 1940 film Fantasia. Bassoons feature prominently in the orchestra, and it is highly fitting that the music should be presented here on four bassoons.
