Description:
This collection brings together 41 distinctive miniatures by Marguerite Balutet, Mel Bonis, Ethel A. Brady, Teresa Carreño, Cécile Chaminade, Hedwige Chrétien, Chiquinha Gonzaga, Viúva Guerreiro, Fanny Hensel, Emilie Mayer, Maria Ramalho Pires Galvão, Florence Price, and Sophie Auguste de Weyrauch. The collection includes poetic character pieces, romantic piano miniatures, choral songs, waltzes, gavottes, barcarolles, tarantellas, madrigals, and dances.
"Why do clarinet students often encounter music by female composers only late in their studies—or not at all?" This question has preoccupied Katharina Bohlen time and again in recent years. Her vision is to change that: she wants works by female composers to be readily accessible to young clarinetists from the very beginning. This idea gave rise to a collection of 41 clarinet duets.
She based the collection on miniatures for piano or choir by 19th- and 20th-century female composers, which she arranged for two clarinets. All the arrangements were tested and refined in the classroom, ensuring they are ideally suited for teaching.
"Exploring the female composers’ clarinet duets was a real joy for me. The pieces are incredibly diverse; every single one is a surprise. For me, the technical challenge was just right. Sometimes the Latin American rhythms were tricky, other times it was the unfamiliar harmonies. I’ll definitely be playing ‘A Gay Moment’ by Florence Price again and again," said one of Katharina Bohlen’s students.
Poetic character pieces, romantic piano miniatures, and choral songs meet waltzes, gavottes, barcarolles, tarantellas, madrigals, and dances. The arrangements not only make a wide stylistic range accessible for two clarinets but also demonstrate how diverse and imaginative the works of female composers from various eras and countries are.
