Description:
In writing this concerto, I wished to continue my work on the idea of movement begun with works such as Moving for string trio or Formes du vent (subtitled cinq études de mouvement): in this piece for solo cello, I had explored the universe of Pierre Reverdy, poet par excellence of fugacity and movement, who evokes a world where "everything is unbalanced and tangled". Here, I wanted to deepen this exploration, in particular through the choice of the clarinet, whose infinite possibilities of timbre and great velocity enabled me to generate writing that was by turns fluid, nervous and violent. The title Drift seemed to me to encapsulate this aesthetic of flight, in which the wind carries the elements of the world beyond all possibility of grasping. The piece is underpinned by a trajectory that alternates between the mobile and the immobile, moments of frozen vertigo preceding a new gust that erases all reality and drags the universe into an inevitable slide. The presence throughout the work of obstinate elements, presented in different ways and culminating at the very end, underlines the inexorable nature of this vision of the world. Edith Canat de Chizy
