Description:
Carl Nielsen's Fantasiestück for clarinet and piano is a youthful work. Nielsen was a member of the military band in Odense, Denmark. Only between 16 and 18 years old at the time, he demonstrated with this miniature on the one hand his early maturing talent for composition and on the other hand his socialization through the music of the classical and early romantic periods. Through its skillful combination of cantabile with brilliant agility, the two-part fantasy piece offers a welcome change in the clarinet repertoire. Our edition is based on the only surviving source in the Royal Library of Copenhagen, long thought to be a copy, which has now been definitively identified as an autograph manuscript.
