Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy

O for the Wings of a Dove

Taken from Mendelssohn's 1884 anthem Hear My Prayer for soprano, chorus, and organ, O for the Wings of a Dove has captivated audiences for generations with its lyrical purity and heartfelt longing. This arrangement for clarinet ensemble preserves the expressive sweep of the original solo line while allowing the ensemble to explore Mendelssohn's rich harmonic world. The soaring melody is shared between the upper three clarinets, supported by flowing inner parts and a warm, resonant bass foundation. The writing makes full use of the clarinet family's natural blend, creating a sonority that echoes the smooth, sustained lines of organ and voice.

Perfect for concerts, church services, memorial occasions, or any programme needing a moment of reflective beauty, this arrangement is accessible to developing players yet musically rewarding for more advanced groups.
