Description:
Phil Edwards is dedicated to the well-known British clarinettist. Phil Edwards premiered the piece with his duo partner David Elwin in Brighton in August 2024.
Philology is divided into three movements. Its two outer movements are full of energy, dynamism and drive, and yet very different. The first movement has a playful, floating lightness, the third is wilder and more dramatic.
The second movement is based throughout on a rhythmic ostinato of 24 plus 26 crotchets. The ostinato is played by the piano, initially in unison, then, slowly developing, in eight-part chords towards the end of the movement. This piano part is played around by the clarinet with great leaps, arpeggios and trills in a virtuoso and imaginative manner.
In Philology, the clarinet can show off its richness of sound, its wide range and its many different expressive possibilities to wonderful effect, with the piano as an equal partner. It is a piece for musicians who love rhythm, color and a certain challenge in music.
