Description:
Sharply defined shifts in mood define *Spanish*. Oscillating between profound seriousness and capriccio-like delight, between sorrow and furiously exuberant exuberance, the result is a highly intense piece of music brimming with expressive power.
"Spanisch" is a melodramatic character study that addresses the misery of the World War. The following text by Dagmar Schumann inspired the composer:
I ask my angel why he lets me have such terrible dreams every night, and my angel says: It is war. In war, houses and people burn.
So my angel says: It is war. In war, it is not only the trees that are uprooted. The bombs are falling. It is like the Second Great War.
Great, says my angel, is only God; if you could understand that, there would be no wars.
