In 1886, the former Royal Prussian Military Kapellmeister Robert Kietzer, who was probably a cornetist, was appointed to the Imperial Russian Military Band in St. Petersburg. His Schools for Cornet, Clarinet, Trumpet, Baritone and Bass, Alto Horn, Tuba and Helicon, Trombone and Drum were extraordinarily popular and are still among the standard works of educational literature today. The composition of the present etudes dates from around 1892, and the notebooks also contain some etudes by Friedrich Müller and Heinrich Baermann. To this day, they have proven themselves as standard collections for clarinetists, whereas Kietzer's other compositions (mainly Russian military marches and romances) have disappeared from memory.
