Description:
It was my encounter with the jazz saxophonist and flautist Bobby Rangell that inspired me to write the Three Sketches for flute and guitar. With a lively, fast tempo, the first Sketch (à la folie) evokes an unrestrained passion whose spontaneity had long been held back, only to be suddenly released. The second Sketch is a tribute to Claude Debussy. Bucolic in character, it is meant to be interpreted with greater freedom, constantly floating between written music and improvisation. I dedicated the third Sketch to Egberto Gismonti. Its basic rhythm is borrowed from the baião, a typical dance from Northeastern Brazil, which originated in guitar interludes used by singers to showcase their oratorical and poetic talents. The final Aria concludes these three pieces like a farewell. (Benoît Schlosberg)
