Alongside the violin, the transverse flute is one of the preferred solo instruments in Johann Sebastian Bach's chamber music, even if the circumstances surrounding the composition of the individual works are not fully known. Although three of the seven flute sonatas are attributed to Bach, they were not demonstrably composed by him, which is reflected in the division into two volumes, BA10961 (BWV 1034, 1035, 1030, 1032) with the four sonatas by Bach and BA10962 (BWV 1033, 1031, 1020) with the three sonatas attributed to Bach.

For this edition, the flautist and teacher Cathrin Ambach arranged the sonatas for two flutes so that they can be accompanied by a second flute in lessons without the need for a keyboard instrument. By preserving the original flute part in the Urtext of the "New Bach Edition" and the elegant arrangement of the continuo and harpsichord accompaniment, it is possible for two flutes to play together at a comparable level of musical quality and close to Bach. This edition is compatible with the editions of the sonatas in the Urtext of the "New Bach Edition" (BA05198 and BA05220).
