Krzysztof Penderecki originally wrote Misterioso for flute and piano as a contribution to the flute school Skola na flet by Eugeniusz Towarnicki. This was published in 1963 and is considered the first flute school in Poland to establish itself as a standard work. For the present new edition of the Misterioso, a sophisticated new notation was created.
