Description:
According to Max Unger, Beethoven wrote the "Romance Op. 50" in the years 1798-1799. It is characterized by pure classicism, an open cantabile style, a simple structure and a predominantly relaxed expressiveness that has nothing in common with the drama of the composer's other instrumental works. This is one of the reasons why Op. 50 has been adapted in numerous versions, the best known being the version for piano four hands by Czerny. The transcription for flute published here is thus in the tradition of the time and also ties in with Beethoven's sophisticated salon style, which can be found in the Serenade Op. 25 composed two years earlier, in which the flute plays an important role. This applies all the more to the composition of the Romance, which is "pure" and dispenses with the polyphony and virtuosity characteristic of the violin, enabling a simple transposition in the original key from one essentially melodic instrument to another. At a time of relative musical scarcity, this work contributes significantly to the enrichment of the flute repertoire with a piece of undeniable value.
