Since Hugo Riemann, the Mannheim School has been a collective term for the music of the Electoral Palatinate under Elector Karl Theodor, who resided in Mannheim from 1743-78, and for the musicians who worked in Mannheim during this period. High-ranking virtuosos were members of the Mannheim orchestra, of which Charles Burney wrote in 1772: 'There are really more solo players and composers in this than perhaps in any orchestra in Europe ...' 'No orchestra in the world has ever beaten the Mannheim one,' Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart wrote in 1784. String and wind instruments were superbly featured in the Mannheim orchestra.
Our 'Flute Music of the Mannheim School' series aims to introduce Mannheim flutists (including J. Wendling and J.

G. Mezger) and composers who wrote for flute, with works still worthy of edition today.
