Description:
Arthur Willner (1881 - 1959) studied piano and composition in Leipzig and Munich, then was first deputy director of the Stern Conservatory in Berlin, later teacher at the New Vienna Conservatory until he emigrated to England in 1938. His compositional oeuvre is extensive, and many of his works have been premiered by such important performers as Henri Marteau and Carl Flesch. Nevertheless, many of his works remain unpublished to this day. The present sonata for flute alone is Willner's only flute piece. In the flute literature of the 1st half of the 20th century, it occupies an important position between the Sonata (Appasionata) in F sharp minor by Sigfrid Karg-Elert from 1917, which was also published by Zimmermann, and the Eight Pieces by Paul Hindemith from 1927.
