Sergei Prokofjew

Sonata op. 94

Composed in 1943, Prokofiev’s Sonata for Flute and Piano Op. 94 is now regarded as a cornerstone of 20th-century flute repertoire. Written during the composer’s wartime exile in Perm, far from the frontline, the work unfolds a musical language of striking lightness, lyrical beauty, and formal clarity. This four-movement sonata demands a wide range of technical and tonal abilities from the performer: precise articulation, confident command of the upper register, virtuosic agility and a keen sensitivity to tonal color and musical contrast. In its expressive depth and compositional refinement, Prokofiev’s Sonata stands on equal footing with the great Romantic sonatas for violin and cello. It offers flautists a rich addition to their repertoire, that both challenges and cultivates technical mastery and interpretive insight.
