Description:
Undercurrents was composed in the spring of 2007 for Amy Porter, a longtime friend and inspiring musician. The work is written for solo flute. This instrumentation was chosen to offer the performer the greatest possible freedom of expression. As every flutist knows, the flute offers nearly unlimited technical possibilities and allows for an extraordinary variety of timbres, articulations, tempos, and dynamic nuances. Moreover, it is one of the few instruments whose sound never tires the ear, which is why it is particularly prized by composers. "Undercurrents" consists of a single movement with several interconnected sections that flow seamlessly into one another. Themes recur throughout the work in various forms, thus creating a continuous musical context. The work can be described as a musical stream of consciousness—yet with a clear inner direction.
