In addition to his nine monumental symphonies, Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) composed an extensive body of sacred music, including three settings of the Graduale Christus factus est. The second, almost unknown eight-part version for mixed choir (WAB 10) is published here. It was composed in 1873, the same year in which Bruckner composed the first version of his Third Symphony. The structure of the work is particularly interesting: the quasi-gregorian opening is followed by an episode of romanticized baroque counterpoint. Bruckner's characteristic style then comes to the fore: a sound pyramid of ascending thirds illustrates the glorification of Christ. In just a few minutes, we hear Bruckner's entire compositional development in its essence.
Each piece in this collection is accompanied by a preface that provides historical context and insights.
