Description:
Robert Delanoff - PHOURHIES (2005) for horn quartet In PHOURHIES, Robert Delanoff presents a work that is as imaginative as it is original. Its mysterious title is composed of the first letters of the French names of the four sea creatures that inspire the movements. The three-part piece transports the listener into a colorful underwater world with an extremely vivid tonal language. The first movement, L'oursin et le phoque, contrasts the sharp, spiky character of the sea urchin with the lurking, playful nature of the seal, creating an expressive dialog. The second movement, L'hippocampe, creates a delicate, floating atmosphere whose lines capture the graceful movement of the seahorse. The finale is L'espadon, a lively, sharply contoured movement that traces the aggression and energy of the swordfish. With a total duration of around ten minutes, PHOURHIES impressively demonstrates the diverse expressive and creative possibilities of the horn quartet and combines imagination, character and instrumental virtuosity.
