Description:
These very short pieces clearly have a Scottish flavor. The first movement, The Mull Ferry, describes the crossing to the island of Mull in the Hebrides - a beautiful, yet barren and melancholy landscape. The next piece is quite different - Tossing the Caber refers to a typical Scottish sport in which strong men in kilts throw a whole tree trunk as far as they can. Glencoe depicts a remote valley in the Highlands, which to this day recalls the tragic event of 1692, when members of the MacDonald clan were cruelly murdered by an army of the rival Campbell clan. Here the oboes sound a lament with traditional bagpipe embellishments. The finale, Sauchiehall Street, conveys the bustling atmosphere of Glasgow's busiest street. These miniatures are ideal as a performance piece for advanced oboe students.
