Concertino for Cor Anglais by John Glenesk Mortimer is a unique work in the repertoire for cor anglais, dedicated to the talented musician Mika Sato. Composed in three contrasting movements, this Concertino highlights the expressive colors and technical possibilities of an instrument that is far too rarely allowed to shine as a soloist. The first movement, Allegro, opens with lively, rhythmic energy. A dynamic dialog immediately develops between the soloist and the orchestra, in which virtuosity and melodic clarity merge. The second movement, Andante malinconico ma con moto, shows a more introspective side of the instrument. The melancholy is characterized by inner tension, carried by a flowing and expressive line. The third movement, also Allegro, concludes the work with a brilliant, lively finale and offers the cor anglais expressive terrain full of vibrancy and character.
