The 12 canons—which are written in the Baroque style and are reminiscent of G. Ph. Telemann’s canon sonatas—can be played on a wide variety of instruments (recorders, flutes, violas da gamba, violins, oboes, clarinets, and others) and are just as much fun to play solo as they are in duets.
Each piece is printed in two different keys (in fourth transposition), so the canons can be played on alto recorders just as easily as on soprano or tenor recorders, and players of other instruments can choose the key that suits them best.
