This edition contains 20 psalms from the first edition of Becker’s Psalter, published in 1628. Composer Heinrich Schütz based his work on the complete German rhymed psalter by the Leipzig theologian Cornelius Becker, which Becker had already published in 1602.
Schütz’s four-part settings enjoyed great popularity even during his lifetime. Conceived as vocal works—and modestly described by him as "HaussMusic"—the settings can also be performed with a mixed vocal and instrumental ensemble. A purely instrumental arrangement featuring recorders, violas da gamba, or other melodic instruments is also particularly appealing.
