John Dowland is best known for his "Ayres", the songs with lute accompaniment. But he also wrote ensemble music for viola da gambas and violins. In particular, his collection "Lachrimæ or Seaven Teares..." (1605) is an excellent expression of the melancholy of England in the first half of the 17th century.

The first seven movements of this collection are pavans on the song "Lachrimæ or Seaven Teares". They are based on Dowland's famous song "Flow my Teares" from the "Second Booke of Ayres" from 1600. These seven pavans as a version for recorder quintet (SAATB) are the content of this edition.
