Description:
Johannes Eccard’s Christmas double-choir piece "O Freude über Freud" is included as No. 9 in the edition "First Part of the Prussian Festive Songs, from Advent to Easter, for 5, 6, or 8 voices." The first edition of this print was published in 1642 by Wendelin Bodenhausen in Elbing. The text is attributed to Georg Reiman.
Although originally intended as a vocal piece, this double choir can also be performed as a vocal-instrumental or purely instrumental arrangement with recorders (SSAB/ATTB), viols da gamba, or other melodic instruments. A broken consort instrumentation is also particularly rich in sound; for example, the first choir could be performed with recorders and the second with strings.
