The three-part madrigals included in this volume of the "Song Collection for 3 Voices" series are taken from the collection *Ayres or Phantasticke Spirites*, published in London in 1608. In it, the composer Thomas Weelkes (c. 1576–1623) presented songs and madrigals ranging from melancholic to cheerful and witty.
The three-part pieces printed in this modern edition can be performed by a vocal ensemble, with recorders (SSA or SST), by a viola da gamba trio, or with other instruments. A mixed vocal-instrumental ensemble is also very appealing.
