Description:
The collection The Division Flute (1706) contains unaccompanied pieces as well as a larger number of divisions for recorder and continuo. The term division had various meanings. In the present case, it denotes a chain of variations (a set of divisions) over a constant bass (the ground) and the corresponding harmonies. This music-making practice persisted, especially in England, into the 18th century.
