Description:
The Five Character Pieces for Saxophone Quartet are (similar to the twelve studies for the same instrumentation that Kremp composed in 2019 and which are published under the title flower, fruit and thorn pieces published by the publisher Chili Notes) can in principle be performed in any selection and order. Even more than the twelve studies, however, they reveal a stringent cyclical relationship if all five are actually played in the given order one after the other. The individual sentences are also broader and less characterized by aphoristic brevity, which is typical of most of the studies produced a few years earlier. The first four of these character pieces are paraphrases of the first four numbers of a collection of piano pieces that Kremp composed in 2022/23. They were sketched immediately after this piano collection. Repetitive patterns play an important role in all five pieces. The impression of monotony that they create can at the same time sensitize the perception of micro-variations for those who are able to engage in this game, which would easily be obscured by stronger contrasts. Such stronger contrasts are found mainly between the individual movements, but at the same time there are also elements that wander from one piece to another. Thus, the chorale melody of the first piece is taken up again in the third, while an inconspicuous final gesture, which marks the end of this third piece, then becomes the basis of the entire fourth movement. The most extensive fifth movement is then also characterized by greater contrasts and thus seems to expand into symphonic dimensions. All five pieces are intended for the classical quartet instrumentation with soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophone (abbreviations: S., A., T. and B.). Both in the score and in the parts, these four instruments are notated transposingly in the usual way, i.e. they always sound correspondingly lower.
