Description:
Entrelacs was written in the summer of 2013, as a work commissioned by the Suntory Foundation for the Arts. It is a single-movement piece, in which two solo cadenzas entitled "Solitaire". In the work, each instrument of the orchestra, as well as the solo saxophone, plays its characteristic motif and figures simultaneously, but the whole creates the sonority of the music. In other words, each instrument is just one element in the overall interweaving. And this "interlacing" changes at a rapid pace. At the beginning of the piece, the saxophone is just one part of the whole, but as the piece progresses, it also goes through two cadenzas and gradually establishes itself as the soloist of the whole. For me, this will be the fifth piece I've written for saxophone, and all five are written in completely different instrumentation. However, the saxophone solo part of this work shares ideas with those of Arabesque III with piano, which I composed 30 years ago, and Iki-no-michi (Les voies du souffle), created in 2012 using electroacoustics.For me, the saxophone continues to be a wonderful instrument that allows me to compose in the broad scale from sound to noise that is essential to my composition.
