La Gammonaira was commissioned by the saxophone quartet "Spectrum" for their planned debut CD, which will only contain pieces by Austrian composers. The compound word "gammon-aira" stands on the one hand for the composer's passion for backgammon, which he has passed on to "Spectrum" over the years and comes on the other hand from "aira", the paradisiacal place in Spain, and the finca "La Donaira". The piece is made up of numerous different parts - like the myriad options of the ancient game of backgammon.
