Description:
In early 2023, I asked my colleague and friend Branford Marsalis to write a piece for solo baritone saxophone. Although he is better known for his work as a jazz, pop or classical saxophonist, and less so as a composer, I felt that he would be able to find a specific sound for the baritone and write something very personal and 'special'. On the other hand, I suggested that he include a particular 'challenge': the 'high' register (altissimo), which is too rarely used for this saxophone. The result, in my opinion, is a piece in two very different movements: the first exudes a great deal of melodic sensitivity and 'antiquity' in the musical material, while the second is more rhythmic, square and virtuoso. The use of the high register is perfectly natural in this 'baritone candy'. Arno Bornkamp
