Rhapsody in Red is dedicated to Emmanuelle Roh, a young percussionist with a passion for mallet instruments - vibraphone, xylophone and glockenspiel - as well as for the world of wine. The work reflects her sense of tonal and rhythmic discovery, alternating between sparkling lightness and intense outbursts, culminating in a brilliant, colorful finale. The composition unfolds in four movements, each of which reveals a facet of this musical universe: - Blue Slide opens the rhapsody with a sequence of introductory glissandi - alluding to another famous rhapsody - and then segues into a short blues section that immediately establishes a jazzy color and free character. - Sparkling Steps places the glockenspiel in the foreground in the very first bars, which is immediately surrounded by the wind orchestra. Together they develop luminous motifs reminiscent of the bubbles of a sparkling wine in a rhythmic dialog full of jazz influences and rousing energy. - Sweet Vibes presents the vibraphone in a warm atmosphere, comparable to the roundness of a noble sweet late harvest wine. The harmonies, steeped in jazz and swing, unfold smoothly, carried by the discreet but expressive accompaniment of the wind orchestra. - Dance of the Grapes concludes the work with the xylophone, in lively, dance-like rhythms that combine virtuosity and composed improvisation. Soloist and ensemble finally unite in a festive finale, in which jazz and vitality interweave - a reminder of the energy of a young, fruity wine and the generous warmth of the red wine that gives the work its name. Rhapsody in Red thus offers a musical journey full of contrasts and colors, with each movement presenting a different expression of its sonic world.
