Description:
The Nocturne for alto or tenor trombone and strings is part of a series of works for various brass instruments: *Postcards* for solo instrument, *3 Miniatures* with piano, *Nocturne* with strings, and *Concerto* with a full orchestra. Like the other works in the Nocturne series, this Nocturne for trombone also begins with the trombone alone. After a lyrical and plaintive opening theme, the strings enter with a motif of their own. Both motifs run throughout the entire work, but are interrupted by an energetic Allegro in 12/8 time, which ultimately leads back to the opening theme. The work ends in a contemplative atmosphere. The Nocturne was composed for Branimir Slokar on the occasion of a concert celebrating his 50th birthday.
