Uncle Teddy, Opus 239, was composed in 1910 by the Czech composer Julius Fučík and is a brilliant, characterful march that impressively reflects its creator’s expressive and melodic style. The work was originally titled Uncle Tom and was composed at a time when Fučík was leaving his post in Hungary to take up a new position in Bohemia. The final title is said to refer to U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, who was nicknamed "Teddy." In keeping with Fučík’s musical aesthetic, this march combines energy, elegance, and a richly contrasting structure with a characteristic lyrical expressiveness. Although "Uncle Teddy" is less well-known than some of his most famous works, it captivates with its dynamism, sophisticated composition, and rousing character. The work demonstrates Julius Fučík’s talent for creating music that is at once accessible, expressive, and particularly effective in a concert setting.
