Description:
Cantus and Lances is a sonata for trumpet and piano written in a decidedly contemporary musical language, whose title already foreshadows its two poles: the "Cantus," an inner, lyrical song, and the "Lances," sharp, cutting, almost warlike gestures. From this duality emerges a powerfully contrasting work in which contemplation and vehemence ceaselessly clash and respond to one another. Slow, meditative sections—a solemn "Lento rigoroso" or a floating "Largo"—are followed by vehement, explosive episodes, "Vivo" or "Agitato," driven by cutting rhythms, sharp accents, and biting energy. The trumpet unfolds its full range of possibilities here, from the most expressive singing to the most incisive runs, with extended effects such as the "growl," while the piano, alternately partner and adversary, weaves a dense and dramatic tapestry. Demanding and intense, this sonata offers both performers a work of strong character, poised between lyricism and tension, in which virtuosity is placed in the service of an expressive statement of great power.
